IMTC Technical Program

Peter S. Filipski
Technical Program Co-Chairmen
IMTC/97 is shaping up as a very interesting
and informative conference. We would like to share with you some
of the statistics. Almost 420 abstracts from six continents were
submitted. As the duration of the technical program of the conference
is limited to only two and onehalf days, we were not able
to accept all of the submissions. This very difficult task of
selecting the papers was in the hands of the Technical Committee,
which consisted of over 40 members. We would like to thank all
the members for their contributions.
With so many contributions there will be 4
sessions running in parallel. However, we tried to avoid conflict
between the concurrently running sessions.
Several of the sessions are designated as
special sessions. These will be chaired by wellknown scholars
from the international industrial and academic community, who
will open each session with an invited paper given on a broad
topic of the session, and followed by four more specialized presentations.
The chairmen were involved in organization of these sessions in
collaboration with our Technical Program Committee. We are very
grateful for their collaboration.
It is worthwhile to note that many papers are devoted to applications of new technologies in instrumentation and measurement. Applications of fuzzy systems, neural networks, virtual instruments, to name only a few, not only merited several dedicated invited and contributed
sessions but are also a subject of a special
preconference Workshop on Emergent Technologies and Virtual
Systems for Instrumentation and Measurement to be held in Niagara
Falls, ON, Canada, which we would like to bring to your attention.
We are inviting you to take part in IMTC/97.
Not only will you be participating in an interesting and multidisciplinary
conference, but you will also be able to enjoy Ottawa in May,
at the time when our city is in full bloom.
Special Presentations
Exhibits of technical products and services
will be held in a central presentation area. All morning and
afternoon coffee breaks will be held in this area, along with
the traditional welcoming wine and cheese reception from 6 p.m.
until 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Manufacturers and suppliers of instrumentation
and measurement equipment, software and books have been invited
to take part in this special presentation.
The Poster Paper portion of the Technical Program
will occupy a section of the hall with authors in attendance to
discuss papers and technologies on a one-on-one basis with attendees.
The "meet the experts" atmosphere of the Poster Sessions
will take place on Monday afternoon and evening and Tuesday afternoon.
Pre-Conference Workshop
A special workshop on Emergent Technologies
and Virtual Systems in instrumentation and measurement will precede
IMTC/97 with a two-day presentation at Niagara Falls, Ontario
on Thursday and Friday, May 15-16. Papers will be presented on
theoretical aspects, experimental results and practical applications
related to advanced technologies.
Topics will include
| fuzzy logic | virtual instruments |
| genetic algorithms | smart structures |
| laser and optical measurements | world modeling |
| microwave measurements | model identification/validation |
| advance digital signal/image processing | multi-sensor fusion |
| advanced analog signal processing | interactive virtual environments |
| wavelets |
Conference Proceedings
A copy of the IEEE IMTC/97 Conference Proceedings
is included in the registration package and will be distributed
at the registration desk. The Proceedings will include
copies of technical papers presented during the conference. Extra
copies of the Proceedings will be available at registration for
$40 each.
Speakers Breakfast
An authors/speakers breakfast will be held
at 7 a.m. each day for speakers presenting papers on that day
to meet with session chairmen for a briefing on procedures and
facilities. All speakers and session chairmen for both morning
and afternoon sessions of the respective day are invited - and
expected - to attend the breakfast. A speaker's preparation room
will be open throughout the conference and 35mm slide carousel
trays will be available.
IMTC/97 Special Issue
A special IMTC/97 issue of the IEEE Transactions
on Instrumentation and Measurements will include a selection
of papers presented at IMTC in Ottawa. Authors are invited to
submit manuscripts for consideration for the special issue. Submitted
papers will undergo standard IEEE review processes.
Manuscripts should be prepared according to "Information for Authors" - included in author kits - and must meet all requirements for publication. Material must be submitted to the registration desk during the conference.
