Ø IEEE Canada Board of Directors Renew Your Membership for 2010Membership renewal notice for 2010 will be arriving shortly. Watch for it. Remember, IEEE membership can connect you with professionals who can open doors to many opportunities. There are also many online resources available to members (e.g. online books and publications). Use your IEEE Web Account and password to renew online at http://www.ieee.org/web/membership/renew/index.html Membership Dues in Special CircumstancesIEEE realizes that economic circumstances may impact some members' ability to pay the full amount of IEEE membership dues. For this reason, the following special circumstance categories have been established. Special circumstances are not available to Student members. Only one category may be claimed in any year. Vancouver Section investigates Linux server performance optimizationFriday Oct 16, 2009, 3 pm, 2332 Main Mall, UBC, Vancouver, BC Talk abstract: The Linux operating system has gained significant popularity in the past several years as a platform for a diverse set of client and server computing machines. This talk describes the various methodologies used to improve the performance of the Linux kernel on high-end enterprise server machines. Described are methodologies for measuring, analyzing, and improving the performance and scalability of the Linux kernel, focusing on platform-independent issues. A diverse set of workloads are described, including web serving, database, and file serving. In addition, various components of the Linux kernel (e.g., disk IO subsystem) are examined. Several well-known benchmarks are used to quantify Linux performance for these workloads and system components. The results show significant improvements in the Linux kernel for enterprise servers with 2 to 16 computing units. Speaker biography: Sandra K. Johnson is a Senior Technical Staff Member at IBM. Her previous assignments include working as the Chief Technology Officer, Global Small and Medium Business for IBM Systems and Technology Group, the Linux Performance Architect, and managing the Linux Performance, WebSphere Database Development, and Java Server Performance teams within IBM development and research organizations. She has conducted research in a number of computer related areas and was part of the design team that developed the prototype for the IBM Scalable Parallel Processor (SP2), the base machine for "Deep Blue", IBM's world famous chess machine. South Alberta Section posts upcoming events onlinePlease refer to the following link for the latest activities hosted by the South Alberta Section: http://sas.ieee.ca/events.html Ottawa Section celebrates recent advancements in photonicsFriday, October 30, 2009, 12:30pm - 4:30pm, M-50 Auditorium, NRC Main Campus, Ottawa An IEEE-PS/OPRA/OPIN-OPC/NRC event. A Symposium on the above topic will be held on Details program and details will be posted on the IEEE Ottawa Section website London Section on selling solar electricityThursday Oct 7, 2009, 5:30 - 7:30 pm, N105 Lambton College, Sarnia, ON The Green Energy Act, 2009 (GEA) was introduced to the Ontario Legislature on February 23, 2009. It includes a proposal for a new renewable energy program known as a Feed-in Tariff (FIT) Program designed to further encourage the development of renewable energy supply. Part of the FIT program will allow homeowners to sell solar electricity (for systems < 10 kW) for approximately $0.80 kWh. The speakers (Ed and Sharon Nicols) will be walking us through exactly what steps need to be followed to takeadvantage of this program and what costs you will encounter along the way. By the end of the session you will know what paperwork needs to be filled out, who to contact for each step, what costs are involved at each step, pricing on various solar systems and what sort of payback period can be expected. For details: http://london.ieee.ca/2009-10-07_Selling_Solar-Sarnia/2009_10_7_sem4_nicol.pdf Montreal Section examines topics on digital TVWednesday October 21st, 2009, 8:30am to 4:00pm, Concordia University, SGW Campus, EV 260, QC Various topics on digital TV will be reviewed: DTV Basics (advanced), DTV Monitoring and ATSC Mobile DTV. For details: http://ewh.ieee.org/r7/montreal/index.php?q=node/75 Toronto Section seminar on on image and video processingTuesday, October 27, 2009, 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Eric Palin Hall, Room EPH 216, Ryerson University Some video processing and computer vision methods consist of several (weak) sub-algorithms whose individual decisions are integrated to reach a (strong) final decision. We present a framework for active fusion of sub-algorithm decisions based on the well-known least-mean-square (LMS) adaptive filtering algorithm. The weights corresponding to individual sub-algorithms are updated on-line using the proposed adaptive method in the training (learning) stage. The error function of the adaptive training process is defined as the difference between the weighted sum of decision values and the decision of an oracle (operator). Individual decision results are updated by making orthogonal projections onto hyperplanes defined according to the decision of the operator for the next stage. The proposed decision fusion method can be used in semi-automated video surveillance applications. A video based wildfire detection system will be presented as an example.
