The IEEE Canadian Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the IEEE in Canada, is happy to accept your contributions when you renew your IEEE membership in the fall each year.

IEEE Canadian Foundation - 2013 in Review

In Dec. 2013, the ICF Board of Directors (BoD) approved $10k for McNaughton Learning Resource Centres. Two new Centres were approved; one at ETS Montreal, the other at UOIT, Oshawa. Five upgrades were approved for Concordia University, Montreal; Algonquin College, Ottawa; University of Ottawa; University of British Columbia - Okanagan; and Carleton University, Ottawa.

The BoD approved $6k for five Special Grants. They go to the Laval University students for their Baja Vehicle competition for the vehicle transmission control and timing measurements, the Longfields-Davidson Heights Secondary School robotics project, the University of British Columbia international field trip, the Queens Communication Symposium for student paper travel support, and the UOIT Maker Fair.

The ICF Board also renewed the annual awarding of two prizes at Super Expo-sciences-Hydro Quebec $1650 ($825 each); that this continue for the next five (5) years (2014-2019); and that be reviewed for renewal by the Board in 2019.

2014 will mark the IEEE Canadian Foundation (ICF) 20th anniversary as a foundation in its present form.

2013 has been a busy year for the IEEE Canadian Foundation. The following is a list of activities undertaken. The Foundation would like to thank all contributors, participants, and donors for their support. Here is a summary of the grants and awards awarded in 2013:

Nov 2013

ICF Life Members Fund has been created to enable Canadian IEEE Life Members to contribute to the objectives of the IEEE. LM donors will appreciate that the 2014 coaster medallion is the first with a Canadian theme, the Landing of the Transatlantic Cable at Heart's Content, Newfoundland. http://ieeecanadianfoundation.org/EN/don_lmf.php

ICF provided a Special Grant of $500 to the IEEE Student Branch (SB) of McGill University in April this year to support their second Symposium on Biomedical Engineering.

IEEE PES Scholarship Plus recipients have been announced for Canada:

  • Danielle Conway, Memorial University, 2014

  • Stephanie Gerbeau, McGill University, 2015

  • Christian Jegues, University of Manitoba, 2014

  • Kyle Mouratidis, The University of Calgary, 2014 (John W. Estey Scholar)

  • Sarah Walinga, University of British Columbia, 2014

All of these individuals will receive $2,000 USD from the IEEE Foundation for being recognized as PES Scholars. Kyle will receive an additional $5,000 as being the top scholar from the Region. Your donations to the IEEE Canadian Foundation IEEE PES Canadian Scholarship Fund will sustain and enhance this program for future Canadian recipients.

Aug 2013

In april 2013, ICF provided a Special Grant of $2k to IEEE Canada Humanitarian Initiatives Committee (HIC) for the IEEE Canada HIC 2013 Student Competition. HIC reported that the competition was held at 2013 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE) in Regina, Saskatchewan, May 5-8, 2013. It entailed three presentations, and the winner was Marielle Magtibay, undergraduate student at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Waterloo, with the paper "Design of a Hybrid Renewable Energy System for a Northern Ontario Community".

ICF provided a Special Grant of $1k to the IEEE Student Branch (SB) of McGill University for a field trip to New York.

ICF Special Grant of $1k was provided to the IEEE Student Branch (SB) of Carleton University for 2013 Student Professional Awareness Conference (SPAC). SPAC is organized by the joint efforts of Carleton University, University of Ottawa, and Algonquin College students. The goal was to provide students with an opportunity to interact with academia and high-technology industry from the Ottawa region.

Jun 2013

IEEE Canada Women in Engineering (WIE) Prize for 2013 was awarded to Malika Meghjani of the IEEE Montreal Section, a Ph.D. student in Computer Science, at the School of Computer Science, Centre for Intelligent Machines, McGill University, as nominated by Dr. Roni Khazaka, professor at McGill University and Chair of the IEEE Montreal Section. This Prize of $1k is awarded to a female IEEE Canada member who received her first professional degree within the last ten years and who is active in IEEE activities.

May 2013

ICF held its 2013 Annual General Meeting, at the Delta Airport West, Toronto, on April 10, 2013. The Board supported by the external auditors, recognized 2012 as another good year for philanthropic activities, exemplified by prudent financial management, rigorous review of applications and broadening of development activity.

At the ICF BoD Meeting which followed, the Board approved one-time Special Grants in the amount of $6.5k to: IEEE Canada Humanitarian Initiatives Committee 2013 Student Competition initiative (Technology for humanitarian causes); McGill BioEngineering Symposium (Technology for humanitarian causes); the IEEE Toronto Section Photonics and Electron Device Society Chapter for the Plasmonics Summer School for students from the local universities, the First Robotics Team of King's Christian Collegiate, Oakville; the McGill IEEE Student Branch for the McGill & École de technologie supérieure (ETC) USA Field Trip; the DIY Maker Lab for Girls, a gender friendly workshop designed for teenage girls to learn electrical and electronic principles by doing; and the 2013 Student Professional Awareness Conference (SPAC) of the IEEE Carleton University Student Branch in Ottawa.

Four 2013 ICF Scholarships in the amount of $5k each (total $20k) were approved for:

  • Callahan Collier of University of Saskatchewan, nominated by Dr. Francis Bui, Student Branch Counselor (SBC)

  • Amir Rahemtulla of University of Alberta, nominated by Dr. Jeremy Sit, SBC

  • Adrian Wong of University of British Columbia, nominated by Dr. Ali Mesbah, SBC; and

  • Mohamed Abdelazez of Carleton University, nominated by Dr. Calvin Plett, SBC

Mar 2013

In support of the 2012 IEEE Student Branches' upgrade applications, ICF has awarded $10k for McNaughton Learning Resource Centre Grants to: McGill University, Dalhousie University, Carleton University, UBC Okanagan University, Queens University, and University of Regina.

2014 IEEE Canada International Humanitarian Technology Conference (IHTC)

Date: June 1-4, 2014
Location: OMNI Hotel, Mont-Royal, Montreal

Cosponsored by: IEEE Canada, Montreal Section, Ottawa Section, Toronto Section,Vancouver Section, Northern Canada Section, and Newfoundland and Labrador Section

The 2014 IEEE International Humanitarian Technology Conference (IHTC) will be held in Montreal, Canada from June 1-4, 2014. The conference will focus on humanitarian applications of technology in the general areas of technologies for improving the lives of underserved peoples (including aboriginal/indigenous peoples), technologies for the disabled, health-related technologies, humanitarian engineering educational programs, and technologies to assist in disaster situations. The conference will feature outstanding keynote speakers, workshops, a student paper competition and peer-reviewed papers. Technology-oriented papers and papers describing social and economic factors related to humanitarian technology implementation are welcome for the conference.

2014 Electrical Power and Energy Conference (EPEC)
