Ø IEEE Canada Board of Directors 2009 MGA Outstanding Large and Small Section Award RecipientsCongratulations to the IEEE Vancouver Section (R7) for being chosen as the recipient of the 2009 Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Outstanding Large Section Award and the IEEE Canadian Atlantic Section (R7) for being chosen as the recipient of the 2009 MGA Outstanding Small Section Award. The Vancouver and Canadian Atlantic Sections were chosen "For successful efforts in fulfilling the educational and scientific goals of IEEE for the benefit of the public by maintaining, enhancing, and supporting the Student Branches, Technical Chapters, and Affinity Groups within their geographic boundaries." The MGA Awards and Recognition Committee and the MGA Board were impressed by the quality of the nominations submitted and congratulate all Sections that submitted nominations for these awards. Canada Atlantic Section: 2009 MGA Outstanding Small Section Award Previous 2010 Chair Charles Cooke Michael Lamoureux Vice Chair Michael Lamoureux Jianjun (Jason) Gu Secretary Philip Zinck / Neil Glennie Richard Itiveh Treasurer William Perry Laurence T. Yang The IEEE Canadian Atlantic Section (R7) works to facilitate relations between Higher Grade members and Student members. The Section's fall Student Branch event is open to all members, and the Section always organizes talks by Higher Grade members on the Engineering profession so Student members can "Meet an Engineer." IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) held a social event to allow Student members to meet members from industry. Many technical events were held at the University to encourage interaction between Higher Grade members and Student members. The Canadian Atlantic Section is also heavily involved in the Annual Student Paper Competition, where they present awards to the top three presenters before sending the finalist on to the National IEEE Student Paper Competition. At this event, students not only get judged by professional members of IEEE from industry, but also get a chance to interact with the members in an informal session after the competition is over. The Section formed an Industry Advisory Council (IAC) in July 2009, which is composed of senior level individuals within the local technology sector. The IAC ensures that: (1) a direct line of communication exists between the Section and their industry, association, and government partners; and (2) the Section is aware of opportunities for guest speakers and tours relating to the interests of local industry. The Section also contributed to the advancement of the profession, local industry, and the local economy by working with Tourism Vancouver to help attract more IEEE and other professional conferences to Vancouver, making it easier for Section members and other engineers to stay current; raise the profile of local industry; raise awareness of local government, of IEEE, and the electrotechnology industry; and benefit the local economy. Two new milestones in Vancouver approvedIEEE Board of Directors approved the following two Milestones at its June 27-28 meeting. Both of these Milestones were sponsored and are located in the Vancouver Section. First television broadcast in Western Canada, 1953

New templates available for IEEE websitesdCustomized sub-site templates are now available to volunteers tasked with producing Web content for an IEEE society, conference or program sub-site. Designed by the Corporate Web Team, with help from a number of IEEE stakeholders and an outside vendor, the templates provide site maps (starter information architecture documents) and a collection of HTML pages and files for each of the three common types of sites. This resource is intended to enable IEEE groups to more easily develop cost-effective Web sites that leverage the IEEE brand, adhere to IEEE guidelines and styles, and drive user engagement. At the heart of many DSP algorithms is the well known fast Fourier transform algorithm. The algorithm is based on measuring the amplitude and phase of sinusoidal basis functions that have no common energy (orthogonal) to make a functional expansion of a given function. For signals containing frequency components the are not orthogonal, energy is spread across the entire spectrum of the FFT in every frequency bin. The fast orthogonal search algorithm (Korenberg 87) fits a functional expansion using non-orthogonal basis functions. This can allow an efficient functional expansion with many fewer terms in the model. FOS has been used in several applications to improve the performance of existing algorithms. Some of the applications to be presented in this talk include: breast cancer detection, data compression, torpedo detection, correcting atmospherically distorted images and target tracking. Georganas, OC, OOnt, FIEEE, FRSC, FCAE, FEIC, Distinguished University Professor at the University of Ottawa, suddenly passed away on July 22nd after a short illness. Before his death, Professor Georganas was member of IEEE Canada Awards and Recognition Committee. Our thoughts are with Professor Georganas' family and friends in these difficult times. The following is a short biography of Professor Georganas, courtesty of the IEEE Ottawa Section newsletter. Prof. Nicolas Georganas, IEEE Fellow. Prof. Nicolas Georganas was a Distinguished University Professor in Faculty of Engineering, University of Ottawa. He was appointed founding dean of the Faculty of Engineering in 1986, where he served a seven-year term. He was appointed associate vice-president, research (external) on May 1, 2005. Nicolas Georganas published over 400 technical papers, co-authored a book on computational algorithms and was editor-in-chief of ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications, as well as an editorial board member for many respected computing journals. Some of the many prestigious honours he received include the Humboldt Research Award (2010), the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2003) and the Killam Prize for Engineering (2002). He was named secretary of the Academy of Science, Royal Society of Canada (2008); Officer of the Order of Canada (2007) and Pioneer of Computing in Canada (2005). He held a Canada research chair in information technology from 2001 to 2005 and was inducted as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (1990), the Engineering Institute of Canada (1994), the Canadian Academy of Engineering (1997) and the Royal Society of Canada (1997). Professor Georganas received an honorary doctorate from the Darmstadt University of Technology, in Germany, and from the National Technical University in Athens, Greece. Humanitarian initiatives looking for volunteersIEEE Canada has established a new committee to support humanitarian initiatives in Canada. The Humanitarian Initiatives Committee (HIC) shall contribute to promoting IEEE core value of advancing technology for the benefit of humanity; raise awareness of how IEEE Canada can best use its strengths and relevant technologies to address societal problems; provide leadership, encouragement, and support to Sections and Chapters interested in humanitarian initiatives; identify and inventory humanitarian activities across Canada; coordinate activities with IEEE worldwide humanitarian committees and initiatives. We are looking for volunteers from all sections to get involved. We would love to work with you; and we will be more than happy to have you join one of our current initiatives: create process for shipping and receiving equipment for humanitarian initiatives, design of open source Lithium Ion battery charger, organization of Canada-wide student competition of open source hardware for humanitarian projects, organization of humanitarian workshop for CCECE 2011. Ø Our Members in the Spotlight 2010 IEEE Haraden Pratt Award: Ray FindlayPISCATAWAY, N.J., 17 June 2010 - Raymond David Findlay, a professional engineer whose volunteer leadership and service have enhanced the technical prestige of IEEE and benefitted its members, is being honored by IEEE with the 2010 IEEE Haraden Pratt Award. IEEE is the world's largest professional association advancing technology for humanity. The award, sponsored by the IEEE Foundation, recognizes Findlay for sustained leadership at IEEE and regional levels in effecting positive change for IEEE and its members. The award will be presented on 26 June 2010 at the IEEE Honors Ceremony in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and will be broadcast live on the Web through IEEE.tv (www.ieee.tv). Findlay's knowledge of the history of electrical engineering and IEEE, his dedication to member services and student activities and his belief in IEEE as a transnational technical society can be seen in his over 40 years of dedicated volunteer service. The IEEE McNaughton Learning Resource Centre at the University of Saskatchewan recently received an upgrade grant from the IEEE Canadian Foundation. The grant enabled them to expand the range of equipment available to IEEE members in their out-of-class learning experiences. For example, several IEEE student members are part of the University of Saskatchewan multidisciplinary Space Design team which won first place in NASA's 2010 space elevator competition. This team needed to test different motor systems and made use of the new McNaughton Centre equipment to obtain motor characteristics. The photo shows their lab setup. By the way, this NASA competition included 29 teams from 7 countries and our Canadian team was the winner - congratulations to the U of S for providing this entrepreneurial environment..
