A brief history of IEEE Canadian Foundation (ICF)

After Revenue Canada granted ICF charitable foundation status, ICF started operating under its new status in January 1994. Prior to that, the ICF existed in other forms. More about the ICF history can be found at http://ieeecanadianfoundation.org/EN/history/history.php.Since many small charities succeed in operating for only a few years, the ICF 20th anniversary, and still going stronger, is a remarkable achievement of the Foundation. It was made thanks to the continual support of many ICF donors/contributors over the past two decades and a large number of ICF volunteers and IEEE Canada members. This sustained success in providing benefits to IEEE Canada students, recognition and awards to IEEE Canada members, and to the engineering community in Canada is a cause worth celebrating.

IEEE Canadian Foundation - Submission

Special Grant

Earlier this year, a $500 ICF Special Grant was awarded to the IEEE Canada Humanitarian Technology Conference (IHTC 2014). (http://ihtc.ieee.ca/). The HTC reported that the conference was successfully held in Montreal, Quebec, on June 1-4, 2014, and that the ICF Special Grant was used to support registration fees provided of students. The student participants had presentation in the poster and oral sessions.The conference attendees were very pleased and plans are under way for the next 2015 International Humanitarian Technology Conference in Ottawa. The students supported were:

Call for CJECE Associate Editors

The Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering (CJECE) board is currently looking for Associate Editors in the areas of computers, sofrware, communications, information theory, and signal processing.

The Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering (CJECE) is the flagship IEEE technical journal of the area in Canada. The CJECE (ISSN-0840-8688), issued quarterly, has been publishing high-quality refereed scientific papers in all areas of electrical and computer engineering since 1976 and is indexed in ISI and IEEE Xplore. Each Associate Editor (AE) is appointed on a 6-month probationary term to be extended to a 2-year term. AEs will receive a small number of papers each year in their general areas of expertise. Successful volunteer candidates will be required to secure a minimum of 3 independent reviews for each paper in 4 weeks.

Interested researchers are invited to send their intents along with an up-to-date CV via email to s.yousefi at the domain queensu.ca or on LinkedIn. The CV is not required if the LinkedIn account contains the relevant information and the track record in research and publications.

To help you make a great first impression, IEEE partnered with OptimalResume, a career services company in Durham, N.C., to create IEEE RésuméLab, an online program that helps you with the many tasks needed for landing a job. This includes writing better résumés and cover letters, creating a portfolio or a video résumé, and improving your interviewing skills.

Launched in January, IEEE RésuméLab is free to all IEEE members.

James M. Ham Remembered Through National Student Safety Competition

The James Ham Safe Design Award Competition celebrates its fifth year of national operation in 2014, having begun as an Ontario-only competition in 2006. The organizer is not-for-profit Minerva Safety Management Education Inc. The competition's namesake is also fondly remembered by IEEE Canada through the renaming of the Outstanding Engineering Educator Award in his honour in 2012.

Dr. Ham was Dean of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering from 1966-73, and Dean of its School of Graduate Studies from 1976-78. He was University President from 1978-83. Respected for his concern with societal and human needs, Dr. Ham's Royal Commission Report on Health and Safety led to the creation of Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act in 1979, and to the adoption of the Internal Responsibility System in Ontario workplaces.

The safety competition is open to all engineering undergraduate students from Canadian universities and colleges with accredited engineering programs. The awards recognize original and unique contributions to integrating safety into engineering design. A first prize award of $3,500 is given, with the second place entry receiving $l,500. Dr. Ham's achievements were earlier recognized by IEEE Canada in 1977 through awarding of the McNaughton Medal for "contributions to engineering research and advanced engineering education, and his ability to liaison between the engineering profession and government." Also a recipient of the Gold Medal of Professional Engineers Ontario, he was inducted into the Order of Canada as an Officer in 1980. Dr. Ham died in 1997. IEEE Canada shines amongst 2014 Canadian Academy of Engineering Fellows

Ten of the 49 new Fellows recently inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) are IEEE Canada members. In a ceremony in St. John's in late June, CAE President Richard Marceau described all the new Fellows as having "demonstrated the ability to perform beyond normal engineering practice and contribute in exemplary ways towards their respective disciplinary fields, and to the wider community."

Marceau's own contribution to the engineering community - and to IEEE Canada in particular -- is of note. The founding editor of the IEEE Canadian Review (1988-90), he is currently V.P. Research at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and before that, Provost and V.P. Academic of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

Along with the Engineering Institute of Canada and five other engineering bodies, the Canadian Academy of Engineering is a member of the Canadian Engineering Leadership Forum.

IFIP/IEEE IM 2015 - The 14th IFIP/IEEE Symposium on Integrated Network and Service Management

Date: May 11-15, 2015
Location: Ottawa

The 14th IFIP/IEEE Symposium on Integrated Network and Service Management (IM 2015) will be held 11-15 May 2015 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and hosted by the Ottawa Convention Centre. Held in odd-numbered years since 1989, IM 2015 follows the 27 years tradition of NOMS and IM as the primary IEEE Communications Society's forum for technical exchange on management of information and communication technology focusing on research, development, integration, standards, service provisioning, and user communities. IM 2015 will focus on the theme "Integrated Management in the Age of Big Data" presenting recent, emerging approaches and technical solutions for dealing with Big Data as well as using it for management solutions. IM 2015 will offer five types of sessions: technical, experience, poster, panel and dissertation. High quality will be assured through a well qualified Technical Program Committee and stringent peer review of paper submissions. A special call for demonstrations is organized to allow industry partners and researchers to demonstrate early products and prototypes.
