Who is a Life Member?
On January 1 of any year, any member who is at least 65 years of age and whose “age plus continuous years of membership” exceed 100 automatically becomes a life member of IEEE. The member is notified by letter in the preceding fall at the time of the annual dues renewal mailing.
Advantages of Life Membership
Mandatory basic dues cease, other charges (e.g. periodicals, conference registrations, etc. are generally lower) and life members are asked to consider making a voluntary donation to one of the IEEE charitable entities such as the IEEE Life Member Fund, the IEEE Foundation, and the IEEE Canadian Foundation.
All life members must return the annual membership renewal form indicating they wish to continue their membership even though no dues are required. A contribution to the Canadian or IEEE Foundation can be made using the same renewal notice; A tax receipt will be issued for donations to the IEEE Canadian Foundation.

Life Member Awards
IEEE Canada Ron Potts LMAG Award
In 2022 IEEE Canada introduced an award for the best Life Member Affinity Group of the year, equivalent to the Affinity Group awards for Women In Engineering and Young Professionals. It is named after the first chair of the Canada Life Members Committee, the “Ron Potts Award”.

MGA Regional Awards for Life Members

MGA Life Members Committee has two global awards for LMAG Achievement, and individual Life Member service.
In 2022 the MGA LMC introduced new regional awards as preliminary selections for the global awards.

Life Member Affinity Groups Procedures
The MGA Operations Manual defines the role of the IEEE Life Members Committee (Section 4.17 of the 2022 version approved on 19 February 2022) which oversees the Life Member Affinity Groups around the world.
The IEEE Life Members site provides a lot of information on how to find, form and run a life members affinity group on its Volunteers page. This includes information on how to obtain financial support, find training, and submit the required meeting and event reports. (Note that each life members affinity group must hold and report on two meetings and/or events annually to qualify for funding from the IEEE.)
