IEEE Canada remembers, through the Phoivos Ziogas Electric Power Award, his contributions to the development of electric power. See the list of recipients of the P. Ziogas Electric Power Award (formerly known as the Electric Power Award).

Biography

Dr. Phoivos Ziogas was born in March 1944 in Preveza, Greece. He received his PhD degree from the University of Toronto in Electrical Engineering in 1979.

In 1978, Dr. Ziogas joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Concordia University as a Lecturer and became a Full Professor in 1985. He conducted fundamental and applied research in the field of Power Electronics. He emerged as an internationally acclaimed researcher in high power converter topologies and control theory. He was one of the first researcher to investigate new converter topologies for high efficiency dc-dc converters, power factor corrected single-and three-phase converters, and ac-dc three-phase rectifiers. He made seminal contributions in the area of pulse-width-modulation (PWM) techniques for harmonic elimination, output voltage control and efficiency improvement. Much of his work was done in collaboration with industry including Northern Telecom and Inverpower Controls. He contributed extensively in the many activities of the IEEE including Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, and the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications. He became a Fellow of the IEEE in 1992. Dr. Ziogas was an affectionate and caring teacher and also served as a Chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

One of Dr. Ziogas’s lasting contribution is in the establishment of one of the leading power electronics lab in the world, which has produced a large number of the IEEE Fellows. This lab has been now named after him, ‘Dr. P.D. Ziogas Power Electronics Lab’.
